Valentine Lunch and Crafting

Lunch will be provided in Beckerle Hall after the 10:30 mass on February 12th for the Young Adults. The plan is to have deli sandwiches, chicken salad sandwiches and veggie sandwiches. There may even be a chocolate fountain!

We will have basic craft supplies to make valentines for a local nursing home. We can also make some for our own significant others, BFFs, kids, etc.

Kids are welcome at this event!

If you would like to bring any side, dessert, drink, or crafty supply to share, feel free to! If you know for sure you'll bring something, please let us know so we don't double up.

Why is Easter Early This Year?

Easter falls on April 8th this year, relatively early compared to last year's date of April 24th. Have you ever wondered why Easter has such a wide latitude of possible dates?

In 325 A.D. the Ecumenical Council of Nicaea, in an attempt to bring uniformity to the Church calendar, established that Easter would be held on the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after the vernal equinox. Easter is delayed one week if the full moon is on Sunday. Thus, Easter has fallen as early as March 22nd and as late as April 25th.

Why base the date of Easter on the cycles of the moon? The Jewish Feast of Passover, which immediately preceded the Resurrection in the Gospel narratives, falls on the first full moon after Easter. The Hebrew Calendar follows the cycles of the moon, rather than the sun. Today, the Jewish Passover usually falls before Easter, but not always. This is because the differing rules between the Hebrew and Gregorian calendar cycles results in Passover falling about a month after Easter in three years of the 19-year Gregorian cycle.

Prelude- Prelude on NETTLETON (Sinner's Call), Gerre Hancock (1934-2012)

As a meditation before Mass, I have a chorale prelude on this common hymn tune. NETTLETON is sometimes known as Sinner's Call, or Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, but is found in our Worship hymnal on page 535 as God, We Praise You. This elegant piece is meant to call us into worship, and to set the tone for how God is calling us in the Gospel lesson. Gerre Hancock was one of the most influential organist-composers of this century. A former student of Nadia Boulanger, he held the position as Organist and Choirmaster at St. Thomas Church in New York City for over thirty years, and later became Professor of Organ and Sacred Music at the University of Texas in 1994. He was the pioneer of organ improvisation in this country and is listed in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. He was also a teacher of mine. He passed away last Saturday at the age of 77.

Opening Song- All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name

To begin the Mass, we will sing a familiar hymn to prepare us for the message found in the Gospel. The tune, called CORONATION, was written by Oliver Holden in 1793. British co-worker of John and Charles Wesley, Edward Perronet wrote the text in 1779, which tells of the unsurpassed power in the name of Jesus. This reflects the idea in the Gospel that Jesus is becoming recognized for bringing new authority, new power, and new teaching to his followers, and that, through Jesus, healing, comfort, and salvation are real possibilities.

Anthem- Order My Steps, Glenn Burleigh (1949-2007)

This well-known gospel song, written by Oklahoma-born Glenn Burleigh in the 1990s, has become a classic. It is one of the most popular songs in the history of the Black Gospel tradition. It is a prayer to God to order our lives, from our steps to our thoughts and to our words. This song echoes the message from this weekend's Gospel that God is in control, that Jesus shows us a "new kind of teaching that speaks with authority." If we answer the call of God, then we are open to His blessings, that He has the authority to see beyond human sickness, beyond human fault to bring us closer to Him. Glenn Burleigh, originally from Guthrie, studied at the Univeristy of Oklahoma and at Oklahoma City University. He quickly became one of the leading authorities on African-American spirituals and Gospel Music. Our guest soloist is Tavis Minner, who is often featured as a soloist for the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame, the Tulsa Opera and others. He is also an award-winning music teacher for Tulsa Public Schools, and has created children's music for educational consultants in California.

Closing Song- We Are Marching in the Light of God

To send us forth from Mass, we will sing the South African song, Siyahamba, known in English as We Are Marching in the Light of God. This song is one of commitment to God, in our lives outside of weekend Mass. As we recognize the power of the Lord in our lives, we start to commit everything that we do to Him and line up our thoughts and actions with His will and His call. I will play this very rhythmically, but will also base it on a more traditional South African choral style, called isicathamiya, made famous by Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Opening Hymn- I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say

We begin Mass with Horatius Bonar's 1846 hymn, I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say. The melody comes from a traditional English folk tune, once sung by wandering minstrels traveling through the countryside. It was one of several folk melodies that composer Ralph Vaughan Williams notated and put into use in The English Hymnal in 1906. The tune is now used frequently with different texts. This text reflects Jesus' call to each of us to come to Him and to serve Him, as heard in this weekend's Gospel lesson.

Anthem- The Call

This well-known piece was written by Mercy Sister Suzanne Toolan in 1986. It can be found in the Worship hymnal on page 633. The rhythmic verses tell the story of the Gospel lesson, while emphasizing the line "leave all things you have and come and follow me." The swaying rhythm is typical of sea shanties and boat songs, and imitates the swaying of ships, which sets the stage perfectly for the story of two fishermen. Sister Toolan is an internationally-renowned composer of sacred music, and much of her music can be found in our hymnals. Her most popular hymn is I Am the Bread of Life, now a part of hymnals all over the world. She is also an important spokesperson in this country for the music of the Taizé community.

Song of Praise- The Call, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)

Once again we hear from Ralph Vaughan Williams in his 1911 composition, The Call. It came from Five Mystical Songs, originally for solo baritone and orchestra. The text is based on George Herbert's 1633 poem, and became a popular poem for weddings. The melody became widely used as a hymn in English hymnals, and is still popular today. Our soloist is longtime cantor and choir member, Jessalynn McCoin.

Postlude- In dir ist Freude, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

This chorale prelude comes from Bach's Orgelbüchlein, also known as The Liturgical Year, as it contains chorale preludes of varied difficulty to be used throughout the church year. Although it is a staple of organ repertoire, few know that much of it was written during Bach's brief time in prison. The Orgelbüchlein redefined the chorale prelude as an art, and it has become an endless source of inspiration for liturgical music. This piece is based on the German chorale known in English as In Thee is Gladness, which tells of the intangible joy that Jesus has brought to Earth, a renewed spirit that gives us strength as we answer His call.

Fundraiser forSisters- Two young women from the Tulsa diocese, Sr. Servant of the Cross,formally Angela Kmetz of St. Mary’s parish and Sr. Our Lady of DivineProvidence, formally Meredith Schneider of Christ the King Parish, are nowreligious sisters in a missionary order, "The Servants of the Lord and theVirgin of Matara." For those peopleinterested in learning about and sharing in their mission, the families ofthese girls are having a free pasta dinner at the Bishop Kelley High Schoolcafeteria on Sunday, January 29 at 5:30. Proceeds from the “free will” offering at the dinner will be used tohelp purchase a new van, a desperate need for these sister’s Novitiate house inMaryland. Their current van has 310,000miles and is unreliable.

Important Traffic Information for this Weekend

What you need to know:

Peoria Avenue near the I-44 bridge will be closed in both directions this weekend.
Access roads to Riverside Drive and Lewis Avenue will be open still.
The Lewis Avenue entrance ramp to I-44 westbound is closed, so you will need to use the Harvard or Peoria entrance ramps.
Westbound and eastbound bound highway lanes are diverted to the eastbound bridge for now.

Suggested path:

Take Riverside to 41st, then turn south on Peoria. If you turn left (east) on E. 48th Place, then right on S. Quaker Avenue, you can skip the long traffic line and wiggle through the neighborhood to the north side of the parish where the rectory is.
Another option is turning west onto the highway access road off of Lewis (just north of 51st), then taking a right on Rockford Avenue and a left on 49th Place.

Knights of Columbus Ultrasound Program Assists PregnantWomen

On January 22, 2009, the 36^th anniversary of theSupreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade legalizing abortion on demand, the Knights ofColumbus launched a new initiative aimed at providing women consideringabortion a new way of viewing the life within them.

Ultrasound exams, which are medically indicated throughoutpregnancy for a variety of diagnostic reasons, use ultrasound waves to scan awomen’s abdomen, creating a picture or “sonogram” of the baby in heruterus. Without the Knights of Columbussupport, most pregnancy care centers would be unable to purchase the ultrasoundmachines, each costing tens of thousands of dollars.

Reports indicate that up to 90 percent of women consideringan abortion choose to have their baby after seeing an ultrasound image. They hear their baby’s heartbeat; they seetheir baby’s head and fingers. They knowit is a child, not a “choice.”

The Knights of Columbus at St. Mary’s is sponsoring anultrasound program to assist pregnant women. We are doing a bank drive through the school and church to pay offUltrasound equipment for Catholic Charities in Tulsa, and if enough is raised itwill go toward other equipment in our state. A cup bank will be offered to your children through the school or youcan pick up one after mass in the vestibule from 12-14 thru 1-23. The drive will last 40 days and ends on 1-23,which is “March for Life”. All money canbe returned after each mass through this timeframe.

All adults are invitedto join other St. Mary parishioners for fellowship, food & fun with SupperClub.

Here’s how it works:

1) Starting Sat., Jan. 7th through Sun., Jan.29th, all interested adults (single or married) can sign up in the back of thechurch on the red clipboard (with a balloon tied to it) in the corner of theCommunity Center. Those who haveparticipated in the past will need to sign up again for the spring session ifyou want to be included.

2) You will be randomly assigned to a group of7-8 people.

3) We will kick things off with “munchies” after5:00 mass in Beckerle Hall (date to be announced). There you will meet your other group membersand decide at whose house you will meet for the first dinner. The host supplies the main course &beverages and everyone else volunteers to bring a dish to complete the meal.

4) Dinners will start in March and continuethrough June with the group dining together once each month. Each couple or single person in the groupwill host a dinner once in their home (or a location to be determined). If there are two single persons in the group,they can share hosting duties. The mealscan be as casual or as formal as the host desires…..paper plates at a park----tochina in the formal dining room..…are all acceptable.

This weekend's episode is entitled "The Fire of His Love: Prayer and the Life of the Spirit", which examines the various traditions of prayer within the Catholic Church. We will discuss the film and look at how personal temperament relates to prayer. Don't worry about "catching up" with the group, the each week stands alone. Epiphany

Prelude- Chorale Prelude on O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright! Paul Manz (1919-2009)

To help set the tone for this celebration of the Epiphany, I have chosen a piece to focus our attention on the star that the magi speak of in the Gospel reading. Manz' piece is based on the hymn tune, Wie schön leuchtet, found in the Worship hymnal on page 390. Paul Manz was one of the most prominent composers of sacred choral and organ music in the past century. His music is a staple in sacred repertoire around the world and has inspired several doctoral dissertations. Besides his numerous compositions, he was also known for his "hymn festivals," programs that would feature hymn improvisations, harmonizations, and congregational singing, instead of the more traditional instrumental recitals.

Closing Hymn- I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light

This popular hymn was written by Kathleen Thomerson in 1966. Besides capturing the imagery of the star for Epiphany, this song also calls for discipleship and commitment. It is not enough for us to simply admire the light of God, but we are called to walk in that light and to let that light shine through us every day. The following is taken from Thomerson's own notes about the hymn:

"I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light" was written in the sweltering hot summer of 1966 by Kathleen Thomerson, an Episcopalian organist. Kathleen had moved to St. Louis, Missouri in the fall of 1995. The following summer, her mother came from Houston, Texas, to visit. Because an airline strike cancelled her mother's travel plans and a heat wave was making St. Louis unbearable. Thomerson decided to drive her mother back to Houston. This hymn came to her as she anticipated visiting her "brothers and sisters in Christ at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Houston. It was written as a scriptural meditation and prayer…On one hand, it may be sung as a prayer for illumination. The congregation sings "Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus." The second stanza conveys a longing to see Jesus and to be led through Christ to the presence of the Father. On the other hand, it may be sung as a song of dedication. The worshiper commits to live in the light of Christ, singing, "I want to walk . . . I want to see . . . I'm looking for . . ." And in hope and anticipation, the worshiper concludes in stanza 3, "When we have run with patience the race, we shall know the joy of Jesus." (From Reformed Worship, Sept. 2008, No. 89)

Postlude- Improvisation: Epiphany Toccata on I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light

Inspired by the message and tune of the closing song, I will improvise a short toccata based on the hymn. I will employ the brightest sounds that this organ has to offer, in order to reinforce the imagery of bright light and the star rising high in the East. Hopefully, this will help us keep in mind the lessons presented in the Gospel as we go forth from Mass, allowing the light to shine through us all week.

The music ministry has been working very hard to prepare a lot of beautiful music for this weekend. This weekend, we will hear from the Family Choir, the St. Mary's Choir, the MaryRingers, a brass quartet, cantors, and soloists. Because there is so much, I am simply listing the selections, without too much commentary. 4th Sunday of Advent

This weekend, the changes in the mass translation, as well as the changes in the music, are in effect. We will be using the Mass of St. Frances Cabrini, which we have been practicing before mass for the last few weeks. The tunes are memorable and very sing-able, and should aid all of us in learning these new texts.

Prelude- O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, arr. Barbara B. Kinyon (b. 1929)/Prepare the Way of the Lord, Jacques Berthier, (1923-1994)

This week, the Mary Ringers will share a selection for the prelude. This simple and meditative arrangement of the familiar hymn will set the tone for mass, as we prepare to sing the hymn all together. The handbell piece will be followed by the Taizé chant, Prepare the Way of the Lord. The meditation will introduce the tune of the opening hymn, as we prepare for worship, and will lead into the choir singing a simple, repetitive Advent chant in a round. This is meant to remind us of the meaning behind the change of season in our church year, that we might approach the each Eucharist with expectant hearts.

Preparation of the Gifts- The Angel Gabriel, arr. David Schelat (b. 1955)

To echo this weekend's story of the Annunciation, the choir will present an arrangement of the well-known carol, The Angel Gabriel. Originally a Basque tune, this modern arrangement keeps the simplicity of the carol's texture, while juxtaposing another tune, sung to the Ave Maria text. This unique compositional idea reinforces the centrality of God's gift to Mary and His love for her. The carol tells the whole story of the Annunciation and can be found in the Worship hymnal on page 695. David Schelat serves as Minister of Music at First & Central Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, Delaware. He is very active as an organist, composer, and clinician, and his music and articles can be found in a variety of publishers and journals.

Communion- Lo, How a Rose, arr. Lani Smith

Karen Hiller and I will play this simple duet arrangement of the 16^th century German melody while the choir receives Communion. This will set a meditative mood to begin Communion, while reminding us of the hymn tune which we will sing together as we all receive. For centuries, this beloved melody has inspired composers to create arrangement after arrangement, without wearing out the beauty of the melody. This arrangement highlights the warmth of the organ and the brightness of the piano as it explores unexpected jazz-like harmonies.

Communion- Ave Maria, 13^th century chant, Irregular, Mode I

The sopranos and altos from the choir will sing this beautiful chant. Because of the beauty and depth of the Hail Mary text (drawn from Luke 1:29), the Ave Maria has been set to music countless times, and is most often heard at weddings and funerals. This 13^th century chant version, however, is not sung very often, despite its simple beauty. Although such chants were typically sung by male voices (monks), this weekend, the women of the choir will present this to reflect the significance of Mary, and to give it a different voice and perspective.

Saint Mary Third Grade Visits Catholic Charities

Saint Mary third grade has proven that they are ready, willing and very able to assist at Catholic Charities. With the help of so many wonderful parents staying to assist, an amazing amount of work was accomplished. The team sorted clothing and repackaged onions for immediate distribution to the poor.

Their enthusiasm and loving hands and hearts impressed Catholic Charities staff, parents and their teacher Anna Marie Rice. After phenomenal success last year as well, this grade will now be included in the ongoing annual commitment from the School of St. Mary for grades 3-8 to serve the needy at Catholic Charities and the Food Bank.

Haiti Dress Sewing Sessions

Saint Mary ladies got together again to sew dresses for the SOLT Mission in Haiti. In addition to the sewing that night, individuals who had sewn at home were stopping in to drop off dresses. The Saint Mary Haiti mission team were able to bring 87 dresses with them for distribution to the poor while there.

Mission team member, Kathy Elliott shares a little more with you, "A huge thanks to so, so many people involved in helping. Feedback has been incredible. Many helpers have not sewn for years and are doing so, experiencing great joy while doing it. Moms and daughters and grandmothers and granddaughters are all working together. The next get together we will be calling upon experienced seamstresses willing to help mother daughter teams. They would need to be willing to help a mother daughter team use their own sewing machine to sew a dress."

Did Jesus Die For All Or For Many?

You might have noticed a change to the words of consecration at Mass this Advent. When speaking of the blood of Christ, the priest now says “it will be shed for you and for many, rather than “for you and for all.” A few parishioners have asked why this was changed and if it reflects a more exclusive view of Christ’s redemptive work. Didn’t Christ, after all, die on the cross for everyone?

One of the objectives of the new translation was to bring forth the Scriptural roots of the Mass. By changing the words from “for all” to “for many," the prayer follows the language actually used in the Gospels of Mark and Matthew. But the the Greek word pollwn does not necessarily mean an exclusive group of people. Rather, it simply indicates a large number of people. Many is to be contrasted with few, not all. In other words, the use of “many” does not imply there are some for whom Jesus did not die.

So who did Jesus die for? Paul writes to the Corinthians, “And he died for all, that those who live might live no longer for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.” (2 Cor. 5:15) John writes that “He is the propitiation for our sins: and not ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world." (1 John 2:2) Following the Apostles, the Church has unambiguously proclaimed that Christ died for all people. Whether or not everyone actually accepts this gift is another question entirely.

3rd Sunday of Advent

Prelude (5:00p)- Advent Celebration, Mark Patterson, (b.1960)

The elementary vocal choir will be joining us for the Saturday mass. They will be setting a tone of anticipation and hope before the Mass begins by singing Patterson's Advent Celebration. This selection speaks of the joy in waiting for the coming Lord, that we not only look forward to the promised hope, but that we prepare for it, and celebrate the expectation that we share. Mark Patterson is an acclaimed composer, conductor, and teacher, currently living in Virginia. He has been a consistent winner of the ASCAP Award in Composition for over ten years.

Preparation of the Gifts (5:00p)- Christ is Coming Soon, Harriet Ilse Ziegenhals, (b.1925)

The elementary vocal choir will be presenting another selection during the preparation of the gifts. This anthem truly encapsulates the Advent spirit. It tells the Advent story, from the Annunciation to the manger, and urges us to prepare for His arrival and "sing hosanna," which we will all do in the following piece of music we sing, the Holy, Holy, Holy. Ziegenhals is a well-known composer, conductor, and organist, as well as the founder of the Jubilate Singers.

Preparation of the Gifts (10:30a)- Comfort, Comfort Ye My People, Michael Bedford, (b.1949)

The St. Mary choir will present this Advent anthem for the 10:30 am Mass. The text is drawn from the book of Isaiah and the tune from Claude Goudimel's 1551 hymn (found on page 370 in Worship). In this song God promises hope and comfort to His people, and we are urged to prepare the way of the Lord. Composer Michael Bedford takes advantage of the dancelike rhythm of the melody and creates a fun, rhythmic accompaniment over which the choir sings polyphonic and sometimes surprising harmonies. Bedford is an important composer of church music today, and his music is presented in service and in concert all over the country. For the past 38 years, he has been serving as Organist and Choirmaster at St. John's Episcopal Church, right around the corner from St. Mary.

Communion (10:30a)- People, Look East, French Traditional

After we sing the communion hymn at the 10:30 am mass, the MaryBells will present a meditation. This version of the popular Advent carol, People Look East, will not only remind us of this season, but will help to guide our prayers in this meditative moment. This traditional French carol, dating from the 17^th century in Besançon, is a song of preparation that expresses exactly where our focus should be during this season. We will all have a chance to sing the carol following Communion, as our closing song.

Knights of Columbus Ultrasound Program Assists Pregnant Women

On January 22, 2009, the 36^th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade legalizing abortion on demand, the Knights of Columbus launched a new initiative aimed at providing women considering abortion a new way of viewing the life within them.

Ultrasound exams, which are medically indicated throughout pregnancy for a variety of diagnostic reasons, use ultrasound waves to scan a women’s abdomen, creating a picture or “sonogram” of the baby in her uterus. Without the Knights of Columbus support, most pregnancy care centers would be unable to purchase the ultrasound machines, each costing tens of thousands of dollars.

Reports indicate that up to 90 percent of women considering an abortion choose to have their baby after seeing an ultrasound image. They hear their baby’s heartbeat; they see their baby’s head and fingers. They know it is a child, not a “choice.”

The Knights of Columbus at St. Mary’s is sponsoring an ultrasound program to assist pregnant women. We are doing a bank drive through the school and church to purchase equipment for Catholic Charities in Tulsa. A bank will be offered to your children through the school or you can pick up one after mass in the vestibule from 12-14 thru 1-23. The drive will last 40 days and ends on 1-23, which is “March for Life”.

Bless Your Tree This Advent

While the decorating of a tree and other greens in the midst of winter is a tradition that predates Christianity, Christians from a very early date used the everygreen as a symbol of their faith. Some saw it as a reminder that our first parents were not allowed to eat from one tree, and that Christ paid the great price for our redemption by hanging on a tree (Acts 5:29-32).

One story has St. Boniface in the eighth century giving the balsam fir tree to the Druids in place of the oak tree, the symbol of their idol. He said, “The fir tree is the wood of peace, the sign of an endless life with its evergreen branches. It points to heaven. It will never shelter deeds of blood, but rather be filled with loving gifts and rites of kindness.”

More and more frequently families are blessing their Christmas trees to reclaim this tradition as a sign of their faith in Christ. This is a great opportunity to pray together with your family. Believe it or not, the Church has an official rite of blessing for the Christmas tree that can be led by lay men and women in their homes.

Preparation of the Gifts- Comfort Ye; Ev'ry Valley Shall Be Exalted (from Messiah), George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)

Handel's Messiah has become one of the most popular pieces of all time in classical music. Now regularly performed throughout the U.S. during the Advent season, Messiah is a staple of pre-Christmas programming. Although this oratorio was not intended for church use originally, the libretto is biblically-based. The text of the selected recitative and aria is drawn from this weekend's Isaiah reading, in which God promises hope and comfort for His people, and in which we are urged to prepare the way of the Lord. Handel brings out the meaning of the text perfectly by basing the tenor melodies on the meanings of individual words. We are blessed to have a guest soloist with us, tenor Brad Morgan, who sings professionally at Trinity Episcopal Church downtown, and who used to serve as cantor at the parish of Christ the King in Oklahoma City.

Postlude- Menuet (from Suite Gothique, Op. 25), Léon Boëllmann (1862-1897)

The closing hymn tells us of the voice of God going out through the world, and I wanted to continue this idea of momentum through the postlude. I drew from Boëllmann's Suite Gothique, which includes a movement with a lot of forward momentum, the Menuet. Boëllmann was a French composer, teacher, and organist, originally from Alsace, who was greatly influenced by the works of Franck and Saint-Saëns. He was organist for the church of St. Vincent de Paul in Paris from 1897 until his death, and his Suite Gothique is now studied and performed by organists all over the world.

Catholic Composer Corner

Jacques Berthier (1923-1994) was a French composer best known for his contributions to the music of Taizé. He first learned music from his parents, then studied at the César Franck School in Paris. In 1955, he was asked to write music for the then-small Taizé community. In 1961, he became organist for Saint Ignace, the Jesuit Church in Paris, and in 1975, he was asked again to compose for Taizé, a community which had grown significantly at that point. Today, almost all of the Taizé chants that we sing come from Berthier.

Hey Everyone!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday. Thanks to everyone who attended our Thanksgiving dinner on November 20. I know this is a busy time of year for everyone, but here are some dates to keep in mind when you're marking your calendar.

Our next formation event is this First Thursday, December 1st at 7pm at the Parish library. The library is located at the end of the hall to the Marian Chapel. So basically, if you're headed to the chapel, just keep walking around the corner and you'll run into it. It will be the last part of Rediscover Catholicism *No worries if you haven't been to the previous ones or read the book- you can still easily participate. If you would like to continue with First Thursdays in a different (or similar) format, let us know! We're exploring our options to keep formation alive and well within the young adults; including a bible study, other Catholic books, a speaker series, etc. Please give us feedback if you would like this to continue. Hope to see you there!

Our next social is a Christmas Decoration Celebration on Friday, December 9th at 6:30pm with Fr. Jack in the rectory. We'll he helping him decorate his home to make it feel like the Advent/Christmas season. It will be a blast! If you would like to attend, please bring a finger food to share!

And, since it is the Christmas season, Ginny has asked us once again to help decorate the Church for Christmas on Tuesday, December 20th at 6pm. It's not a huge amount of work, and with several workers it will go quickly and smoothly. We will have pizza provided to fuel our decorating. Remember, the Church doesn't become beautiful for Christmas without our help!

1st Sunday of Advent

This weekend, the changes in the mass translation, as well as the changes in the music will take effect. We will be using the Mass of St. Frances Cabrini, which we have been practicing before mass for the last two weeks. The tunes are memorable and very sing-able, and should aid all of us in learning these new texts.

Prelude- Improvisation: Meditation on City of God/Prepare the Way of the Lord, Jacques Berthier, (1923-1994)

Choral Anthem- Wake, Awake (from St. Paul, Op. 36), Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)

Mendelssohn's oratorio, St. Paul was written in 1834. Though it is not frequently performed in its entirety, it contains a movement that is very appropriate for this weekend's Gospel, in which Jesus calls us to be alert and to "watch." The text of Wake, Awake reminds us of the parable of the bridesmaids, in which we are called to readiness, waiting for our Advent hope. The music is based entirely on the hymn tune, Wachet Auf, which we sang as a congregation two weeks ago. Mendelssohn engages the hymn tune in a dialogue with trumpets, instruments sure to bring anyone to awakened readiness. The use of a traditional German chorale in this oratorio is Mendelssohn's tribute to Bach, who turned this practice into an art form.

Postlude- Improvisation: Fugue on Come, O Long Expected Jesus

I will improvise a short 4-voice fugue using the closing hymn tune as a subject, or theme. I chose the fugue as the form because its essence represents the Advent spirit. Although the subject itself is a complete idea, the momentum of the fugue is built on the expectation of all voices coming together in the end. As a fugue develops, very little resolves until the end, and it is the waiting and the anticipation that allows for something truly harmonious to result. Hopefully a fugue on Rowland Prichard's hymn tune will help us all to leave with a song of expectation in our hearts.

Catholic Composer Corner

Joseph Gelineau (1920-2008) was a Jesuit priest in France who contributed a large amount of music to the Catholic church around the world. Strongly influenced by Gregorian chant, Fr. Gelineau developed a style of psalmody that has been widely adopted throughout the western world. We often use his psalm settings here at St. Mary's, and will be employing one this weekend. He taught at the Institut Catholique de Paris, and also wrote music for the Taizé community.

Christ the King

This weekend, the music ministry will continue introducing the new mass setting to the congregation. The changes in the mass responses require changes in the music as well. St. Mary's will be primarily employing the Mass of St. Frances Cabrini, written by Kevin Keil. Musicians and cantors from the Tulsa diocese voted almost unanimously on this setting back in August, and it will be employed throughout the diocese for this first year, along with the English plainsong setting and a Latin setting. The tunes are memorable and very sing-able, and should aid all of us in learning these new texts. We will have very brief teaching sessions directly preceding mass to help familiarize the congregation with this new set of responses.

Psalm- The Lord is my Shepherd John Rutter (b. 1945)

The appointed Psalm 23 this weekend will be sung by the choir, and will feature guest oboe soloist, Lise Glaser. This anthem, originally written by Rutter in 1976, was later used as the sixth movement of his Requiem. This gorgeous setting highlights the meaning of the text, with its peaceful, slow-moving harmonies, and plaintive melodies, reminding the listener of a shepherd in a field. Showing influences of the Rodrigo's melodies from the slow movement of his guitar concerto, Concierto de Aranjuez, and perhaps even a bit from Thomas Matthews, our Tulsa composer's setting of the same psalm, Rutter's anthem is a classic. It demonstrates perfectly why he is one of the most successful composers of church music in history.

Choral Anthem- We Sing Praises to Our King/He Reigns Forever Shekinah Choir

For Christ the King Sunday, the choir will be presenting a song from the African-American Gospel tradition. This is a lively song of praise to Christ, the king of kings, first released on an album in 1993 by the popular Shekinah Choir. The end of the song features a repetition of the phrase, "He reigns forever," that paints the idea that God reigns in the hearts of His people continuously, through praise and song. The St. Mary Choir learned this song in a short time, completely by ear, and without written music, the way gospel songs are usually learned in a church setting. The simple harmonies and syncopated rhythms build an intensity that makes it hard not to sing along, and we hope that you do!

Postlude- Giga, from Concerto for Oboe and Strings Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713)

Famous themes from Corelli were arranged into this concerto by Barbirolli for his wife, the renowned oboist, Evelyn Barbirolli. Corelli was one of the most important composers of the Baroque period. His compositions were a big influence on the development of Italian music, especially the concerto, and his Concerti Grossi grew to great popularity. Barbirolli was a well-known conductor, who succeeded Toscanini as music director of the New York Philharmonic, and later became the director of the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester. This concerto has become a staple of Baroque oboe literature, and the kingly Giga sends us forth in a stately mood, with God, the king of our hearts, beside us as we build up His kingdom.

About our guest soloist-

Lise Glaser is principal oboe of Tulsa's symphony, opera and ballet. She also serves as first oboe for Des Moines Metro Opera in the summers after winning a national audition to secure that position in 2005. She has been the primary Adjunct of Oboe at the University of Tulsa since 1994. She studied with the legendary John Mack at the Cleveland Institute of Music, then with Peter Bowman, principal oboe for the St. Louis Symphony. She has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Utah Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, an orchestral tour to Europe as co-principal oboe with the Utah Symphony involving performances in East and West Germany, Yugoslavia, Austria and Lichtenstein, and as first oboe with 5 different southern California orchestras, including playing concertos live on the radio. Glaser has premiered many new works for the oboe, including those written by University of Tulsa music faculty. In addition to teaching oboe lessons, she is the faculty coach for the University of Tulsa student woodwind quintet. She is married to composer/organist Eliot Glaser, and her teenage son Nathan is a trumpet player and gymnast.

School of Saint Mary First to Undergo the Reaccreditation Process

As of this week, Saint Mary’s school will be the first Catholic school toundergo the reaccreditation process by the Oklahoma Conference of Catholic Schools Accrediting Association (OCSAA). We are extremely proud of our school and its staff. What amazing work they have done to be prepared for this visit.

Our school is at the heart of our parish's mission. The School of Saint Mary is our part in providing quality Catholic Education for the Tulsa Diocese. Many studies reveal that Catholic schools produce high-achieving students who become philanthropic and faith filled adults committed to the community around them. Thank you to all who contribute to the operation of our school.

A little more about the process:

The evaluation is the culmination of a 7 yearself-study evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of 6 key areas.

Those areas include: 1. School and Community,2. Mission, Philosophy, and Objectives, 3. Teaching and Learning Environment,4. School Staff and Administration, 5. Student Services, and 6. Plant andFacilities.

This week an evaluation team from the OCSAA is visiting. During their stay, the will conduct interviews with the principal, teachers, pastor, students,School Board and Home and School Association.

This team is made up of representativesof both Oklahoma (Arch)dioceses, a representative from the Oklahoma PrivateSchool Accreditation Commission and from Newman University. *

Thecommittee periodically examines the principles and standards used as criteriafor accreditation to be certain that they are based on desirable and currenteducational practices.*

TheOklahoma Private School Accreditation Commission, OPSAC, assists the OklahomaState Board of Education by monitoring and approving organizations thataccredit nonpublic (private) elementary and secondary schools in Oklahoma, suchas the Oklahoma Conference of Catholic Schools Accrediting Association.*

Catholicism Project Continues This Sunday

Join us this Sunday for the second episode of Fr. Robert Barron's documentary: The Catholicism Project. Episode 2 is entitled: "Happy Are We: The Teachings of Jesus."

Fr. Barron will examine the beatitudes, the misunderstood command to turn the right cheek, and a number of other challenging teachings of Jesus.

After viewing the episode, we will discuss the ideas of the video in small groups. We will meet in the St. Francis room at 9:10 a.m. and finish around 10:15 a.m.
