SOLT Haiti Mission Girls Dress Sewing Project

Do you have sewing skills? Would you like to teach your child/grandchild to sew or copy patterns?

Dress patterns and instructions are being made available, with your help in duplicating, for sewing colorful, brightly patterned, cotton, shift dresses for the SOLT Haiti Mission students and refugees to wear in the summer. You and your family choose and provide the fabric. Our wonderful St. Mary Girl Scout Troops have already begun work on this project, but we welcome and encourage anyone who would like to participate, to please do so.

Please email Kathy Elliott at delliott3@cox.net, or call 744-6124 if you would like to help duplicate patterns and/or sew a dress(es) for the needy in Haiti. Thank you!

  1. Here's an idea you may want to explore to expand on this ministry or to get it off the ground.

20 years ago I was in a group called The Guild of the Christ Child and we made baby clothes and blankets for girls in Southeastern Oklahoma.

Our work really got off the ground when we started meeting once a month at one of the churches. We made it a full day with doughnuts in the morning and then some ladies would make a big pot of soup in the kitchen so that we could work and then take a break for lunch.

We all brought our sewing machines. We would set up stations for cutting out patterns.

It was great fun and we got a lot more accomplished than any of us ever did at home. In effect, we were setting up a kind of sewing assembly line.

Of course we talked while we worked and it was great fellowship.

It's an idea you may want to consider for getting this off the ground.

People with extra sewing machines can bring them to share with others who don't have machines. Ladies with sergers can do the seam finishing.

It's a great way for people with expertise to share their knowledge with beginners.

Those who want to help, but don't want to sew, can lay out patterns and cut fabric.

Others can buy fabric or donate what they have been squirreling away in closets.

It also makes a great inter-generational fellowship event. Even men can learn to sew. My brother David learned and did a fabulous job.

Since I sell real estate, I cannot commit to being there every time, but I'd participate occasionally when I could.

You can call me at 724-8201.
